Site Preparation Project wins Project of the Year Award

The City of Sunnyvale's Site Preparation Project won the coveted Public Works Project of the Year Award for the American Public Work Association (APWA) Silicon Valley Chapter's 2026 Award Program.

The Site Preparation Project laid the groundwork for Phase 2 of the Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program—the largest phase in the $1.4 billion renovation of Sunnyvale’s Water Pollution Control Plant (Plant).  The scope consisted of influent sewer consolidation, utility relocation, existing facilities demolition, and temporary facilities installation for staff to work in when the rest of Phase 2 is underway.  Locked in by water on two sides and a closed landfill and active transfer station on the others, the Plant had limited space for infill or expansion.  This project created the necessary space so treatment facility construction can proceed, under other contracts.

The Site Preparation Project was a triumph of logistics over evolving site and schedule constraints, overcoming environmental and administrative hurdles to complete what’s often the most uncertain part of a major infrastructure renovation—the demolition and underground work.
